Comments on WKW's magnum opus of loneliness and love, 2046

I felt like trying to write a proper review for this, scholarly, well informed, insightful, witty but alas, the writing isn't in me at the moment, so let's make this as painless as possible then or else it'll be like pulling teeth...

Five reasons why I think Wong Kar Wai's 2046 will be the best movie I see this year*:

-Wong Kar Wai knows how to shot a film. Every scene, every moment on screen if it were captured and frozen in time would be a work of art. He knows how to direct your eye; covers things you that aren't important, just so you can focus on what you must. It takes your breath away looking at the screen. The slow motion, the framing, the colors, blah blah blah, all of that, top of the line and amazing. He can photograph the human body like no one else. Every character radiating sex and eroticism.

-His films are populated by those lovelorn, hopelessly romantic people I find myself relating to almost too frequently.

-There's an elegance and coolness to everyone on screen: from the way they walk and talk, to the way they smoke a cigarette and the smoke of it as it wafts away...

-Great melodramatic lines like "Take care. Maybe one day you'll escape your past. If you do, look for me." that make you feel for the characters as well as making you want to sucker punch others for what they do and say. I'm looking at you, Mr. Chow.

-The feeling you get while watching it, a happy feeling ( even though it's not the happiest of films ), which restores your faith that good films are still being made.

* Five and a half: Beautiful, beautiful Asian actresses? Yes. Oh yes. Asian girls...
