I understand the point being raise in the original post. But I disagree.

In 2002, in Elkhart, IN a young man was arrested, not charged with anything, held for more than 24 hours without counsel or contact. He happened to be of middle eastern descent. He also happened to be a long-term member of the community, a business owner and well respected in the community. A community that immediately began protesting his arrest. That demanded information and explanation. That did not subside and did not withdraw when they were told the Feds were holding the man. That did not relent until he was released.

He was related to no one in the community but his wife.

I know the story second hand. My mother was one of the people protesting the police department. There was very little news coverage after local news reported his arrest, and Chicago news echoed.

Yes, there were people who said, maybe the government was right, maybe he *was* funneling money to terrorist organizations (you know, like his father and his sisters and their children). But enough people in Elkhart, a conservative, provincial, redneck backwater, stood up for this man and pressed the powers that be to look again, that he was released in a much shorter span than many in that position, at that time.
