One of the options my car DIDN'T have that I wanted... Was a GPS. In truth, it's not something I NEED, because I know my way around Chicagoland... But now that I'm with reliable transportation, my range has extended considerably and things like "Road Trips" no longer require rental cars. SO, with my
TRIP TO THE EAST COAST coming up in just under two months (Not to mention Anthrocon next weekend)... The time seemed ripe for me to buy a GPS... Well, more accurately, my father to buy me a GPS for the trip, but why quibble over semantics? *GRINZ*
BEHOLD, the Navigon 7100:
It's pretty and I like it... Or, at least I thought I did. Besides having a list of features which outshine the competition, it has FREE TRAFFIC MONITORING!!! Which means, not only is it handy for things like road-trips, but quick little trips to the sub-urbs are suddenly SO much more convenient as well, with accidents and congestion quickly avoided... Believe me, I was so excited when it arrived!
And having taken it out on my lunch break for a quick tour of the immediate area including expressway... so far, it's been nothing but glitchy.
While on the expressway with nothing but clear skies above me, it lost the satelite signal. (Picture me, GPS in paw, sticking out the moonroof, trying to aquire SOME kind of signal, no luck.) Oddly enough... Although I couldn't get past the warning screen about no signal, the unit was still giving me directions without problem! And of course, every time it plots a route, it freezes up as soon as it switches to show you the map... OH, and the voice-command... yeah... Click the button, say the name... It hears the name perfectly, displays the screen, then says it's calculating the route... And then pops up the menu asking if you want to calculate the route, with another button to push. (It takes the same number of screen clicks to pull up the location using the screen as it does to verbally, WHAT THE HECK?!?)
I don't know... I've got a feeling this may be getting exchanged. But we'll see how the week goes, I'd like to at least use it for the AC trip.
P.S. In regards to yesterday... Nobody ever said a word... On a personal level, I'm relieved... But otherwise, that's a bit disturbing!
