American Idol 6: Top 24 Males

Feb 21, 2007 19:45

The Idol has landed. The sixth season of American Idol is finally here and I'm so excited for it, that I've decided to recap even the top 24 -- I didn't do this last year. Of course, this will be time consuming -- taking time away from school work -- but when have I ever concentrated on school anyway? I'm so going to academic hell

However, today as I looked online, IdolForums was down and there weren't too many spoilers. Now, I'm so used to seeing spoilers that I sort of got disoriented. Still, thank to the lovely Rickey, I still got my fair share of spoilers. Lovely.

  • Rudy Cardenas - "Free Ride" (Edgar Winter Group) 7
Rudy is a cutie. He's got that clean look going on and I like that. It is difficult to start the show -- being the first ever performance -- and I guess he was nervous. His vocals weren't his best, for sure, but his moves were just wow. A lot of hip-shaking there and I definitely had a great time with that. He may not be vocally stellar, but he's a really good performer who seemed comfortable onstage. So Randy Jackson didn't like it, and neither did Simon Cowell, but really, when did they like anyone this season (that wasn't Sundance! ew). So I'm hoping Rudy stays around.

  • Brandon Rogers "Rock With You" (Michael Jackson) 3
At first, I didn't get how this song could be Rock With You, but then it got faster and I got the song. His vocals were good and I thought his moves were a little calculated, but it was nice to look at him. The judges kept saying that he had to be the lead singer now, and not just background vocals, but I thought he was pretty good with his performance.

  • Sundance Head - "Nights in White Satin" (Moody Blues) 11
First off, I have to say that I am NOT a Sundance Fan. Pamy have compared him to Scott Savol from season 4 and with reason. This guy, isn't even very good. I thought his performance was boring. His vocals were okay, but there was nothing compelling me to watch him. And that's not even because he's not cute, it's because he's just there on stage, belting whatever the hell the song was. That was just whatever. Nothing to me at all. No wonder Sundance ranks so high in DialIdol!

  • Paul Kim - "Careless Whisper" (George Michael) 10
I have nothing against Paul going barefoot, but I hate it when they use that certain characteristic to make them standout. Still, I like the reggae-i-fied version of Careless Whisper. His moves were a little stiff, but it was okay. I have nothing against Paul Kim, so I'm not really for him staying or for him leaving. Still, his performance was just okay.

  • Chris Richardson - "I Don't Wanna Be" (Gavin DeGraw) 12
Holy crap, the voice of this guy is something else! And it's not a good thing. I happen to be obesessed with One Tree Hill right now and I love Gavin DeGraw's version so much better. And Elliott Yamin did a great version last year. He sounded like a little elf. The vocals were below standard and I agree with Simon on that one. Unfortunately, he does get the girl-vote so welcome to the top 12.

  • Nicholas Pedro - "Now and Forever" (Richard Marx) 5
I love this song. He started a bit off, but eventually he got better at it. He even got the falsettos down. I thought he was a little nervous, because his arms were halfway up or he wasn't sure what to do with them. Still, his vocals were good and this is a singing competition after all. It's funny how when Simon said he liked Nicholas, Paula Abdul and Randy were practically eating their words.

  • Blake Lewis - "Somewhere Only We Know" (Keane) 1
I love that Blake chose not to beatbox -- at least he proved that he can sing and not just beatbox. It's funny because the first thing I noticed when Blake came out was how "tall" his hair was. But I finally got over that when he started singing. I love the song choice, because it wasn't the usual and it was current. He didn't move a lot and his hands were a little distracting, but I think everyone's really nerovous. Still. Go Blake.

  • Sanjaya Malakar - "Knocks Me Off My Feet" (Stevie Wonder) 9
I like Sanjaya but I thought his performance tonight was kind of flat. His vocals weren't that great, and he was kind of boring. Thing is, with Elliott's performance of this last year, I was blown away, but this time around, it wasn't as great or even close. The choice of song wasn't good and it's sad because I'm really rooting for Sanjaya to make it. Still, I'll say that maybe it was because he's young and a little inexperienced. But still, there's room for improvement. Age may not be a factor, but experience is.

  • Chris Sligh - "Typical" (Mute Math) 8
I like Chris. I think his sense of humor adds a lot to his personality. However, tonight I wasn't so impressed. He had good vocals, but I think his song choice wasn't the best. He was comfortable on stage, but I know he can do better than this. I know it's in his personality, but I don't like it when he talked back to Simon. The Il Divo thing was just bad, but the Teletubbies was just way weird. Still, I hope Chris gets better because I want him in the competition.

  • Jared Cotter - "Back At One" (Brian McKnight) 2
Wow, I never even paid any attention to Jared and I was missing a lot. This guy is kinda hot. I love this song and I think that he did it justice. It's not easy singing a Brian McKnight song and I thought he did pretty good. He was also quite comfortable on stage and he looked great singing too. I'm really afraid for him because the judges put him down and according to DialIdol he's part of the bottom three. I hope he stays in the competition because we sure need talented eye-candy.

  • AJ Tabaldo - "Never Too Much" (Luther Vandross) 6
For some reason, I got a very Mario Vasquez-esque vibe from him. Apparently, Scott Savol sang this in season 4, but this guy did it so much better. I thought he did a pretty good job at it. I wasn't as entertained as others, but I don't consider it as horrible as how the judges put it out to be. Still, I'm counting on the Filipino vote, as he's partly Pinoy. Then again, Sway Penal didn't go too far.

  • Phil Stacey - "I Could Not Ask For More" (Edwin McCain) 4
Wow, this guy has some pipes. I like it how Phil hit the big notes that he was going for. I don't think he was the best, but definitely among the best -- worthy of getting into the top 12 for sure. I don't like how Simon compared him to Chris though, cause he's not even striving to be a rocker a la Chris. He's got a great personality though about taking in criticism. And he's got a sense of humor too (Ryan said he had the Britney Spears haircut)
    My Bottom Three
    1. Chris Richardson
    2. Sundance Head
    3. Paul Kim

Yes, things could have been better tonight, but considering how it's the first night of competition, I think the guys put a good show. I thought the judges were okay tonight. I guess they're biases aren't too strong yet (other than their blind love for Sundance). It's all up to the voters after all, unless it's rigged of course.
Poll American Idol 6: Top 24 Males Performance
Ryan Seacrest (who was oh so hot tonight) said that if you we still needed more than 5 hours of Idol this week, then we needed professional help. And guess what? I think I need help. Someone call me a doctor!
