This might just be the worst day of my life, a living nightmare. I was subbing at the high school, a 9th grade class and includes some bad students. There are usually two teachers in the class, but there was no sub for the other one so it was only me.
Somehow the kids started talking about a Hit List that I guess on the boys had last year and of course he was upset. They kept talking about it and the madder he got. One girl had been arguing with him throughout the class. I asked them to stop and be quit in a nice way several times, but they continued and towards the end it escalated. They acted like they were going to fight, I got between them and they separated. However, the girl continued to run her mouth.
She was up out of her seat, and my patience lost I got in her face and told her to 'Shut Up.' My voice was raised, louder than I ever yell. Finally a few minutes later the bell rang and class was over.
The next period went better and then in the middle of the following period I was sent to the office,,I knew I was in trouble. I thought it was about the talk of the Hit List and not doing anything about it, but I was wrong. The girl had called her mother and said that she felt she was in danger and that I threatened to hit her. A LIE!!! I'd never harm anyone, especially a student. The principal heard from both of us and asked us to write a statement. He then sent me home and said that I should have handled the situation differently, should have called for help or something. That when there is a substitute he needs to feel confident that things are kept under control and will have to consider if there is that trust with me.
No thought of the 2 and a half years that I've subbed without any such complaint, but one girl has landed me in the Hot Seat. The police could possibly even get involved. Another principal is supposed to get in touch with me and we'll see what happens.
I admit that I allowed the situation to get out of control and shouldn't have allowed it to reach the point of confrontation but shouldn't be in trouble for raising my voice. So the kids can do anything but I can't yell? I told the principal that teachers do the same thing, and he said but that doesn't make it right.
Just never expected all of this to happen.
