Sam would have turned 22 yesterday, Wednesday, May 26, 2010. At work (USGS), Wednesday's are donut day where I purchase a box of donuts and sell them for what they cost me (for the past 30 years). The donut box sits next to where Sam and his computer (desktop from home that he used when at the USGS) were at. Sam would chat with many of the staff who were regular customers. After Sam passed, all donut money collected is donated at the end of the year to the Muscular Dystrophy Association for sending MDA kids to camp (Sam attended MDA camps starting when he was five to his last camp the summer before he died). Last year $350 were donated. Some donut eaters contribute more than the cost of a donut. Sam's Facebook profile (in a stand) sits next to the $ collection box for the donuts to remind regulars of him.
Sam's birthday is a strange day since his passing because it is also the birthday of his twin sister, Shayna. It's difficult to switch back and forth between happy emotions for Shayna and sad feelings remembering Sam. Many of Sam's friends wished him happy birthday on his FB page and post to his page during the year about missing him.
