______

It's amazing how things can change over time.

Even things you had suspected would happen from the very beginning have the chance to surprise you with how they turn out. None more so then the coming together of a couple.

Still as Burt Hummel sat in that registry office and watched as his only son stood in front of them, smiling up at the man he loved he couldn't help but be glad that it had been a surprise.

Every relationship had its good points and bad points, its ups and downs and Kurt and Finn had certainly had their fair share of those but if he was completely honest, he wouldn't change anything about it for the world. Sure, he had been angry when Finn had pretty much called Kurt a fag, what dad wouldn't? But he knew that it had helped Finn grow up, something he had needed. And sure he also wished that Kurt hadn't dated that Sam guy and been so...up-front about it but he knew that he'd needed to have those relationships and for Finn to start to realize that he might actually like Kurt.

It had been a roller coaster of emotions with many lows but they'd gotten through them and here they were now and part of Burt couldn't believe it.

Part of Burt wished that Kurt was still a baby in his arms, that Alison was still with him and watching him coo over this little bundle of joy.

He could feel the tears forming in his eyes and it took all he had to stop himself from crying, it wouldn't be manly to do so after all. He felt a hand take his and he turned to see Carole squeezing it gently as she half-turned to look at him. Tears were sliding down her cheeks as she smiled a watery smile at him and he knew exactly how she was feeling.

Their little boys had grown up and had finally gotten together.

Burt didn't really let his emotions show until they were at reception.

He'd been sitting at the main table, Carole had disappeared to the bathroom sometime ago and last he had seen the boys they had been enjoying themselves and dancing. Which was why he was rather surprised when he saw the familiar figure of his son coming over to him.

“Hey dad,” Kurt greeted as he took a seat next to him.

He looked so bright eyed and happy, hair and designer suit still in the same state as they had been when he had left the house that morning. The gold ring sitting on his finger was new though and Burt didn't miss the way he kept twisting it around his finger, almost as if he was checking whether it was really there or not.

“Hey Kurt. Shouldn't you be out there enjoying yourself with your friends and your husband?”

Kurt smiled softly as he shrugged in answer,

“You looked a little lonely. I can't abandon you just because I'm married now,” he answered and Burt knew that he meant it.

They'd always been close, especially since his mother had died. It had been Burt and Kurt against the world, fixing cars and going camping but as Kurt had grown up he'd grown more into clothes and dancing and that had always been more of Alison's thing then his. He'd tried to be there though and Kurt still tried to take part in the things that made Burt happy.

It was obvious that Kurt hadn't grown up to be the sort of man that Burt had imagined him to be when he was a baby though.

It didn't mean that Burt loved him any less though.

Kurt was his son and no matter what he did he would always love him, be proud of him and protect him.

He wasn't the only man willing to do that anymore and he knew things would never be the same again.

His little boy had grown up and had found love with the guy who had very nearly became his step-brother and now he was a man.

There would no longer be any evenings spent with Kurt curled up on his chest as he watched a football game, no more mornings waking up to find him cooking breakfast before school, no more waking up on father's day to a special breakfast and a smiling face.

Burt was going to miss it all, he loved his son to pieces and though he wanted him to be happy, he didn't want to see him go.

“You okay Dad...you look like you're going to cry or something?” Kurt asked, a slightly awkward laugh escaping him as he watched his dad unsurely. He wasn't used to seeing his dad all emotional and such, angry yes but he usually liked to keep his feelings locked up. And Kurt got that so why did he look like he was ready to burst into tears at any given moment.

“I'm fine...I'm just going to miss you kiddo,” Burt admitted.

The two generation's of men stared at each other for a few moments before a sad smile grew on the younger male's lips and he reached out to hug his father.

“Same dad, but Finn will look after me. You know he will.”

And Burt did.

He trusted Finn, he was almost the son he never had and he knew he would look after Kurt. He was a good guy, a little misguided at times but a good kid nevertheless. He trusted him not to break Kurt's heart a second time. He trusted him to love him, to look after him and most importantly to make him happy and he didn't doubt for a second that he would.

Eventually Kurt let him go and smiled brightly at him, tears obvious in his own eyes.

“I'm going to go back to the party now. I'll see you later and then after the honeymoon I guess,” he said and Burt nodded before he let his son go back to his friends.

He didn't miss the wide smile on Finn's face as he pulled Kurt over to dance, leaning in close to whisper something which made the smaller male blush and giggle.

Yes, Kurt had certainly grown up from that baby boy that Burt could remember holding carefully in his arms, but he had grown up into a wonderful man who was ready to live his own life with his own husband and Burt supposed that he wouldn't wish for anything more.
