Being a younger sibling

We tried to teach Bethany to play hide-and-seek when she was a toddler, but it didn't really work, and she didn't understand how to play it until she was three or so. I think this is because we tried a few times, saw she wasn't getting it, and gave up for the time being and decided to try later.

Whereas Bethany plays it all the time and lets Zoe join in, and she doesn't care whether Zoe's getting the hang of it or not, because she's mainly doing it for her own enjoyment rather than Zoe's. So Zoe's getting much more exposure to it at an early age than Bethany did, and so she has pretty much got the hang of it already.

(Random cute aside: when you find Zoe, she exclaims "Here's me!")

Similarly, for the same reason, Zoe can already "play shops", where she stands behind a toddler-height counter and Bethany or I come up and ask for some item and she pretends to give it to us and we pretend to give her money; whereas Bethany was nowhere near understanding that game at this age.

She's also nearly at the stage of being able to play some basic preschool board games. She'll join in a game with me and Bethany, and she'll do some of the things right, although she won't always wait for her turn.

Some of it might be personality difference, but I think it's mostly the effect of having an older sibling, especially one who's so engaged and involved in playing with her :)
