I was a bit excited about this because it kept popping up on my f-list. I was kind of expecting a somewhat different story than the one I got, but that is not to say ( Read more... )

paranormal romance-like aspect of the bad-ass heroine's inevitable attraction to the beautiful-but-dangerous supernatural boogieman

NGL, this is totally right up my alley.

So this book is set in a steampunk AU WWI and follows a teenage girl that crossdresses as a boy so that she can enter the Royal Air Force.

omg, ALSO SOLD. Actually I'm just bookmarking this whole post! :D

I feel so typical for lapping up beautiful supernatural boogiemen (and women) the way I do, but damnit, they're just delicious.

I cannot over-emphasize the awesomeness that is Deryn. I just. I can't even. FFFFFFFFFFF.

Then I'll save this one for when I'm done with some books I've been meaning to get for a while. I don't want to be underwhelmed because I read CROSSDRESSING CRAZY CHICK first.

Okay! I have just bought Ash and Soulless. Looking forward to them! (Although I am a bit iffy about a review I read comparing Soulless to the Sookie Stackhouse books; I've tried that series and I think I got about thirty pages in before I gave up, wanting too badly to smack both the author and her perky-titted dumb blonde-but-no-really-I'm-actually-smart for major major MAJOR logic fail.)

Also, I wonder if you are familiar with a series that came out a couple of years ago, following Frankenstein's abandoned bride as she sets up shop in a British seaside resort and runs a boarding house? (I can't for the life of me remember the name.)

The Adventures of Brenda and Effie. Paul Magrs. Took a bit to find that one. It's about the abandoned bride of Frankenstein's monster but it won't come up under a Frankenstein-related search. Feh.

Probably it's compared to Sookie Stackhouse b/c they're both paranormals and much more irreverent and comedic than usual for the genre. I haven't read anything but an excerpt of the Sookie books but Soulless's heroine is about the polar opposite of "perky". (I kind of love her.)

Nope, haven't read that! Rings a bell though, maybe someone has mentioned it to me before? I take it you recommend it?

I first heard of Gail Carriger because she does a fashion segment on a knitting podcast I listen to, Brass Needles.

hah, neat! Had no idea. Is it just me or is knitting like, totally taking over fandom? Seems like at least half of all the fans and the writers I'm familiar with are knitting these days...
