The History of Russia is basically a downhill struggle. Famines, crazy rulers, very little order at ANY point in history. Yea, it's...messed up.
Russia started out as Kievan Rus. Or, it was the most noticeable start of the actual country. Rus' was a group of cities, settled by the Eastern Slavs, that was centered around Kiev, it's capitol. Now, things amongst the Slavs didn't remain peaceful for long, and before long, Kievan Rus was on the brink of disbarring and becoming individual city states again. Not to mention the passing of power was really awkward and brutal. Instead of going from father to son, power was passed to the oldest member of the ruling family. NEEDLESS TO SAY THIS WAS BAD, and people killed off family members all the time.
It was during this turbulent time that the fucking Mongols decided to invade, and they totally owned Kievan Rus, or what was left of it. See, because the little nation wasn't cooperating with itself, the Mongols just picked off the cities one by one. OBLITERATING Kievan Rus. SO YEA, THAT SUCKED. It was a really long time before anything happened, the Mongols stayed in control, and Kievan Rus' was no longer there.
Finally Moscow had had enough, and decided to fight back, gaining--
