Character Number: two.
Character: Monoe
Fandom: Yume Nikki
Personality: Monoe the human girl was normal, happy, and carefree, the typical student with friends, a boyfriend, and a normal relationship with her younger sister, Monoko. Life was something she'd wake up to experience every day with a calm and collected manner. She wasn't an easily excitable girl, but she'd smile and laugh and joke as she needed to. Her grades were average, her future wasn't something she had fully thought of yet, as expected from someone her age. She could cook and clean and do the laundry, and was already well on her way to making someone a good wife someday, as her friends always joked with her boyfriend.
But with the death of her boyfriend and Monoko, leaving her alone, all the joy present in that normal school life was sucked away. She didn't slip in her studies or show any negative emotions past her calm smile, but eventually drifted away from others. Living became a burden, one that was so heavy she couldn't stand it for long. Her actions at school and work became so mechanical and precise it didn't even seem like she had any life to her left at all- but with that calm and collected smile, no one could ever say otherwise.
The only time she truly felt relieved was when finally she let it all go.
Monoe the dream is the part of Monoe that Madotsuki could only know from face-value- they weren't close as friends, so in the end, all she can do instead of talk to Madotsuki is smile and fade away... like she had in real life.
Coming to Demeleier, being cast away from the restrictive confines of Madotsuki's dreams, Monoe can properly start to feel and react in more lifelike ways. Now she can speak to others, walk where she pleases, and even life and smile in a more kind hearted way...
Of course, still bitter and defeated by the deaths of her loved ones, Monoe has no interest in living now, much like when she was fully a human girl in her own world. Nothing but a dream and a memory, Monoe would be happy enough to continue fading away, like she had in Madotsuki's dreams.
History: First and foremost, most of this section is based on popular fan-theories thought up by the game’s players due to the nature of the game not having any dialogue or text to support and confirm most things shown in the game. Whether anything in my interpretation of Monoe's character is 'canon' by the creators means is not something I, or anyone, can really confirm for sure. This history will go on the basis that the 'human' characters in Madotsuki's dreams are representations of people she knew outside of her dreams, and have been ingrained in her dream world due to some sort of traumatic or memorable events.
Monoe is shown as a young girl around the same age as Madotsuki, I would peg her as a few years older (15) simply due to how she appears on-screen when Madotsuki attempts to speak with her in her dream world. The Monoe that Madotsuki knew outside of her dreams was the older sister of a young girl named Monoko, who I will assume went to a school with Madotsuki, near Madotsuki, or was simply someone she knew from her neighbourhood. Monoe had a normal school life, an older boyfriend who went to her high school, and a cute younger sister. They lived on their own without parents, but family at least paid for their housing. Any other money was inherited from their parents, or gotten from Monoe's part-time job.
Life changed the day that Monoko and Monoe's boyfriend were both hit by a car one rainy evening: the same car that had crashed into and killed Madotsuki’s own parents.
In an instant, everything that brought joy to Monoe’s life had ended. In that one instant, a future without her loved ones seemed meaningless. From then onward Monoe’s personality changed- she became quiet, almost mechanical in the way she did things. She went to school, did her homework, went to her part-time job, ate and slept. She told friends she was busy studying, told family she was getting by on her own, and eventually just drifted away. To everyone else, Monoe just smiled and seemed fine after the funerals. Her life seemed back to normal. Keeping to herself, no one could ever see past her smile- that inside she was long dead, just like her younger sister and boyfriend.
One, two, three days of school and work Monoe had missed; no one worried at school, and her co-workers were confused when her cellphone was off. Her home line was long disconnected to keep family calls away. A quick peek into her small apartment showed nothing but a dark room, though neighbours assured they had seen her once or twice during the week heading off in her school uniform.
It wasn’t until a few days later that news reported the suicide of a young teenage girl on the train tracks nearby her high school.
She finally knew how they had felt.
Monoe the dream resides in a completely dark tunnel, hidden away from adventurous eyes too hasty to delve further than the surface of Madotsuki’s dreams. She never leaves, walking alone, her thin smile never leaving her face. When spoken to she simply fades away with a smile, never speaking a word.

Sitting there while family members spoke about Monoko fondly, shaking her own hand and offering their condolences. Flowers, gifts, money, kind words and sympathy that would be lost once they left this place. False promises of 'if you ever need anything' as they smiled at her, tilted their heads ever so slightly as they expected her to thank them.
So she did.
One by one she shook the hands of the liars, neighbours, and 'family' until eventually they all left. Only when the last guest left did she turn her head, glancing down at the tiny urn that held her sister's ashes.
It was all she could afford.

Seeing him was harder. Seeing his parents was harder. Sitting through the ceremony, waiting until everyone left before she could get to her feet and force herself to walk to the side of his casket. His face was covered on one side, due to the disfigurations the crash had caused, they'd even forced his fingers into place. She wondered what they had done to make him look like this.
But this was no longer him.
The boy she knew and loved had looked much worse than his when he left this world. She remembered the blood, there was so much of it.
She remembered the slightly green tinge on his skin.
Even when his mother comes to place a hand on her shoulder, gently letting her know, if there was anything she needed...even if she believed in those words, even if she wanted to...
She still couldn't seem to cry.
---
Being in the dark wasn't scary to Monoe.
She had been here for a long time- a long long time. But it wasn't 'forever'.
No, there was some place before this one. Before the darkness.
A place that hurt, a place that made her want to scream and cry and leave that place behind forever.
Now she was here, and now things were...better. She had gotten what she had wanted, hadn't she?
Even if she could never leave this darkness, never go to where they were and see them...
One again, they were at least all together.
She continues to smile, alone in the darkness. Maybe that girl would come to see her again today.
Sample journal entry: [ video ]
[ the girl showed on the screen of the communicator seems too pale to be human- her black hair making her look even more pale. she's dressed head to toe in monochrome, and her eyes are so dark they could never be passed off as merely 'dark brown'.
she doesn't appear to realize that the device is on, and seems to be looking at her surroundings with a never-changing, thin smile on her lips. she's oddly pretty, and appears to be in her early to mid teens. she doesn't seem too affected by the cool, fall air, and if she was...well she's certainly not showing it.
eventually she'll give a quiet giggle, brushing her hair behind her ear. ]
A new dream.
[ as she turns her smile directly toward the camera, it almost feels like she's staring directly at the viewer watching.
the feed then shuts off. ]
