Hello! I owe you a proper reply to your message but, as you can see, I've been busy ;)
Thanks for making a nice comment about the arrangement; it is nothing compared to some of the imaginative creations over at LJ's bentolunch comm. I bought some more sushi-making toys to supplement the collection I picked up at the Japan Centre in London last year. Sadly, I've only had the chance to use them once but I do want to try again as my Japan trip has given me some new ideas. Here a pic of my first attempt: http://wongkk.livejournal.com/12133.html
You're right: baklava is a Greek/Eastern Mediterranean pastry which should be made with honey and almonds/pistachios (as the ones in the photo are) but which is often cheapened (too sweet, wrong flavour) by using syrup instead of honey and peanuts instead of almonds/pistachios.
At the weekend, I gave a birthday party for a Chinese friend going on holiday to Turkey tomorrow and I thought she would like to try some East Med sweets (there were also others, such as date and lemon cakes and cashew rolls) to get her in the right mood! These sweets were popular cos there were only these two little pieces left. The vine leaves were left over too - but everything else vanished!
Mmm - what would YOU put in this three layer box, I wonder?
Oh, I'm definitely not a professional at food! Just an interested amateur. I have to confess to being a bit of a nutrition nazi too.
I hope you do get the chance to try some decent Eastern Mediterranean pastries one day - you only need a little piece but they are nice. They use some interesting flavours such as orange flower water and rose water. They also use sesame and date for taste and sweetness which I like.
Dunno if my friend will enjoy Turkey - she doesn't return till next week so we'll see!
Ah, cuckoo - I mean "you" as in personal pronoun 2nd person singular! But your You fantasy is fun - although I think the furoshiki might have a few violins in between the many Enerus, no? And maybe one camera!
