Yesterday was a national holiday, so today feels like a Monday. Hmm.
Bones! I have always enjoyed this show, but ever since the hundredth episode, with that wonderful heartbreaker of a scene between Booth and Brennan, it has become obligatory viewing for me. They've been dealing with that with such a deft and delicate hand, I'm finding it at the same time heartbreaking and incredibly sweet. The way she compared Booth's date to herself, and then Andrew to Booth, and Booth saying "You are the standart, Bones", sigh, swoon, oh gosh. I always liked them, but now, I ship them kinda a lot.
I was ashamed that I had to check imdb to see that Katherine was played by Rena Sofer. Her face felt so familiar, but the only person I could think of was Lisa Edelstein, and obviously it wasn't her. Oh, Heidi Petrelli, I never thought this day would come.
Clark Edison was awesome as always, and I hope an Angela/Hodgins reunion is coming our way.
Dalek Masterplan broke my heart. On the other hand, I now adore Steven to a point where I think he'd be in a Top Ten Companions list, if I ever could make one. Sara Kingdom, had she had more time, could probably end up there too, because she kicked ass. The following serial, The Massacre, was not as good in terms of story, but very interesting in terms of where it takes both the Doctor and Steven. After being left to his own devices in Paris while the Doctor did god knows what, he befriends some Huguenots and is sickened by the Doctor abandoning them all to their fate when he realizes it's the date of the massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve. Adding that to the fact that Katarina, Bret Vyan and Sara Kingdom had all just died, Steven decides to actually leave the Tardis. And this is when we see the Doctor alone for the very first time, and he talks to himself about Susan and Vicki, Barbara and Ian, and now Steven, all gone.
Of course, then Dodo comes into the Tardis thinking it's an actual police box, and Steven comes back to warn the Doctor about some people outside, meets Dodo Chaplet, who shares her last name with Anne Chaplet, one of the people who helped him in Paris, and hope restored that maybe someone he met survived the massacre after all, goes on traveling with the Doctor.
Three things are are worth noting: one, that the reason Sara Kingdom dies is because the Doctor doesn't share his plan with her and Steven; had he told them, she wouldn't have gone back to try to help and would have been safe in the Tardis, where the Doctor had sent them to. So while Katarina is the first companion who dies, Sara is the first whose death could have been avoided if only the Doctor wasn't so himself, by which I mean secretive. I don't know where I'm going with this, as it's not the Doctor's actual fault and there's not really many companions who die, but I'm making a mental note.
Two, the Doctor finding himself in a situation with an impeding disaster that is an established part of history reminded me of course of Fires of Pompeii and Donna's "at least save someone." The Doctor could easily have taken Anne Chaplet with him, since it's not like she was an important political figure like Steven's other buddies whose disappearance would have been more readily noticed, and Steven clearly cared about her. I'm not saying she wasn't important and history wouldn't miss her because she was a servant, but I would much have preferred this Chaplet to travel in the Tardis.
Three, it is almost interesting that the Doctor sets off in the Tardis promptly after Steven comes back, thus pseudo-kidnapping Dodo, after ten minutes before mentioning Susan by name and later actually saying how similar she looks to his granddaughter. I say almost interesting because I find Dodo annoying as hell, and think she can make even this nice bit of subtext (that is rapidly becoming text) seem annoying. I wasn't wild about Steven at first, but Dodo is the first companion I can't stand, and I've known her for twenty minutes. I hope she gets better.
Having met Dodo, the only other companion left I haven't "met" in at least one episode or audio is Victoria.
ETA: Could somebody point me in the direction of any Dodo meta? I remember reading something about her a while (a ...few years?) ago, but I don't remember who wrote it. Found it!
There's something about one of the spoilery clips for the next episode of New Who that's bugging me, but I decided to wait until the actual episode to talk about it. ETA: Except I ended up talking about it in the comments, so slight spoilers.
Another show that I started out liking but now love is Castle! Beckett/Sam Anders, guys! It is hot like burning, I tell you.
