{Lie #6/Audio} ~ sleep your stolid sleep

[For a long moment, only the sound of Mireille’s slow breathing is audible. The rustle of sheets, as if she is moving, followed by a low gasp. An outdrawn exhalation, then stillness for a couple of seconds. When she speaks, one may notice an uncharacteristic lisp - as if she has problems properly forming the sounds with her mouth. Her voice is ( Read more... )

[ a long, low exhale. almost like... like he'd drawn the breath to speak and then let it back out. because...

well how do you want a guy to react when you run out on him like that and then make this sort of post? not that Silver is the type to blame himself for, for startling her into sickness or whatever it is that's wrong with her. but still. still. ]

[ and a moment of utter silence. Not quite looking away, but with a look in his eyes that makes it clear he may as well be.

He hasn't forgotten her haste to part. it's not that he's holding a grudge, he's just - ]

[ - just what, Silver? If there's a way she expects him to react, if she's waiting for him to tiptoe around her or pretend anything... she should have learned by now he's not the type.

When he does speak his tone is more or less his norm - no colder or blunter than usual, but no warmer, either. It's brisk, more than anything - matter-of-fact and all business.

And concerned. Just a little, just... as far as he is able to express concern, really... but like he won't be polite, nor will he hide what he does acknowledge feeling. ]

It's unnatural to fall so ill so quickly. What's wrong?

[The mattress creaks loudly, her breathing is laboured, as if it takes her a lot of energy and willpower to move.]

[When she speaks, she's very, very close to the mirror, her voice low, almost a whisper.]

You shouldn't -

[Another pause. If he listens closely, he might be able to hear the thickness in her voice, though she is doing her best to detach herself from all these feelings.]

There's no need to worry. The walk home... yesterday... I wasn't properly... prepared.

[ that... is the most ridiculous thing Silver has ever heard, M. Your entire "don't worry" thing might work better if you didn't sound like you were choking to death.

He repeats the question, but with the sort of flat and unamused tone that suggests she simply failed to understand him the first time, since he cannot believe her incapable of giving an answer to what he considers an obvious question. ]

It's still abnormal, to fall so ill. What exactly is wrong?

I...

[She hesitates. Her memory fails her, as it has all night, jumping from one memory to the next, mixing everything together. She can't remember what she has told anyone else. A couple of uneven exhales. And it's not like she wants to lie to him, she just knows she has to. Because she has given him the hope of something, when in reality she has nothing. To give him.]

I hurt my wrist. When I fell. And the cold... has caused me a severe case of... cystitis.

[ i... wut, that is entirely different to every other excuse you gave to everyone else in the thread. And since when did having a cold cause cystitis? and since when did inflamed noses, wrists, and bladders give you a lisp? I don't even... Whatever. Maybe you have a concussion too. ]

Have you seen a doctor?

[ brisk, still - and equally as bewildered by her cystitis as he is by her uncharacteristic way of speaking. if she were trying to avoid him... he would have hoped she wouldn't think up such ridiculous lies for it. ]

No.
