What is the world coming to?

One of the escalators had stopped working at the mall, so instead of using it like a staircase, they put gates on both sides with an 'out of order' sign and cops to guard it and rerouted 'traffic' to the nearest elevator.

OMG this might be the best I have ever heard. DOn't get me wrong or anything by saying this, but something like that would be labled over here in Europe as 'Typical American'. Especially the cop.... that is the icing on the cake. *shakes head*

No offense taken, I feel the same way sometimes and I'm an American.

There was one flight of stairs, two if you count the broken escalator ;), and a crowded elevator beside the escalator.

The funny thing is that people over here would probably even have usd the broken escalators. =)And it makes you really think knowing that prople would rather wair ages for the elevator than taking the few stairs and being whereve rthey have to be faster.

I don't think it has so much to do with speed as it does lazyness. I hate waiting on the escalator to take me up and I always walk it. I honestly don't even know why they were invented. This may sound cold, but elevators are there for the handicapped, elderly, etc. Healthy people should not be near them.

oh yeah laziness. The old excuse =)
I have to say I usually take the stairs as well, except it is like 8 or 10 floors or I have something really heavy or plenty of something with me, than I might consider the elevator, but even then I usually take the stairs for two or three floors before taking the elevator.
Elevators can be really convenient, but they make you really really lazy. I usually see it as some sort of daily workout taking teh stairs in the office. It is just two floors and not that many stairs.
