Do you know about parabens and phtalates? They're found in the majority of cosmetics, and they're linked to cancer and birth defects. Parabens - on the label of your makeup/lotion/soap it would say methylparaben, _____paraben, etc. - are estrogenic, meaning they mimic the function of estrogen in the body. The link between estrogen and breast cancer is well-known.

People have a tendency to assume that if it weren't safe, they couldn't sell it, but that's just not true in this country. Of over 85,000 synthetic chemicals sold in products to consumers, about 10% have been tested for their effects on human health. We spend our lives practically doused in chemicals; it seems to me either naive or sinister to suggest that there's not at least a chance of adverse health effects. Check out the Environmental Working Group's database of cosmetic products here. A third of products tested contain ingredients that are known, probable or possible human carcinogens.
