December rains
Reveal the bones at the beach
Bleached white and
Grinning menacingly
Santa’s image
Is etched in doors
And on our hearts
As they are drawn taut
From expectations
The season’s greeting
Is a timely reminder
That happiness is only
Skin deep in LA
The natives are taught
From a very young age
That the approach of Christmas
Denotes deep spiritual change
So they adorn their cars
In stuffed brown antlers
Red round noses
And false snow flocking
Because without these totems
How would they know
The promises made to them
And how they break?
