america (lyric dump)

i pledge my love
to this, the united states of america
land of my blood
she's all that i know
and i wouldn't trade this home for another one

but i admit she can be a little demanding
and her simple-mindedness can seem like misunderstanding

complicated as any woman i know
and her beauty a sight to behold

with all the stupid things that we do to each other
the marginalization of our sisters and brothers
the hurtful things we do to our fathers and mothers
the betrayl we commit to our best friends and lovers

what becomes of a people who build their lives on the backs
on the oppression of women, the systematic deconstruction of the red man
the slavery of blacks?

the things we do in fear with the idea of protecting ourselves
the crimes we commit out of selfish ambition
not to mention the way we finally claimed
this the land of freedom and slavery

see, my relationship with this lady is a little complicated

our relationship
is a little love and hate

she wants my work, my dedication,
my taxes, my education, my unquestioning patriotism

we've become a people so crowded in the streets
yet miles away from each other in thought
if every man is an island, and we're the children of men
then we've become rocks in the bed of the sea

she makes it hard to trust
in the united us
