Dead Gods: Final Author's Notes

Jul 25, 2014 14:33

I crammed in all seven and a half season of Supernatural in about three weeks during February of last year and by March, I had started writing this story. The ending of the Lisa and Ben storyline broke my heart more than all of the other story lines put together, and I just had to write a fix-it fic. I’m convinced that writers intended us to believe that Ben is Dean’s kid, but the question that I couldn’t answer satisfactorily was if Ben was Dean’s son, why would the angels go through all the trouble to resurrect Adam when there was already a perfectly alive and vulnerable vessel for Michael in Ben? Then I saw 8x16 and this fic bloomed full grown in my head.

After 16 months and lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth, Dead Gods is the final result. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I (usually) enjoyed writing it!

I tried to strike a happy medium between the Greek gods as presented on the show and what we actually know of Greek mythology and religious practices, though of course, I took liberties that worked best for the story. I reread my Ovid, Hesiod, and a good chunk of the Homeric Hymns to refresh myself on the myths about Artemis, Apollo, and Hermes. The climactic scene in Chapter 14 is a riff off of Sophocles Eumenides. Like Apollo, I encourage everyone to read Ovid and all the Greek and Roman authors.

The internet is my source for the medical knowledge presented in this story, so any blatantly wrong information is entirely my fault for ever believing anything the internet says ever.

Thank you for reading!
