I have no idea if anyone on here besides faustian even reads fanfics, but I'm going out on a limb here and recommending the story I've just finished.

I've never recommended a fanfic before so I'm not quite sure how exactly to do this..

This is possibly the best piece of fanfic I've ever read. I've been reading fanfics since 2000, so trust me when I say I wouldn't make that claim lightly.

Here I Stand is a story detailing the life of Lily Evans. It starts the summer before Hogwart's, with Professor Flitwick coming to her house to tell her she's a witch. Lily's parents are muggles who love the idea of magic, and have dragged Lily and Petunia around for years trying to find some proof that it exists. The two girls hate how much this has had an effect on their family so Lily hates the idea of magic and the fact that she's a witch.

The story follows Lily through Hogwarts, out in the real world (which is scary and full of war), Harry's birth and finally, her death. There's even a bit of what happens after death. The author has her facing unique challenges and situations. She develops all of the characters completely and brings in every single fact that's mentioned about the era in books 1-6, and after DH, she includes most of the facts from that book as well. She does keep some of her characters situations the way she had them plotted out before the release of the book, but I think it's only fair, she put a lot of time and effort in getting to where she was.

I don't know what else to say. I recommend it. I've never read a fic that did such an amazing job of keeping everyone in character. She did an excellent job with Lily. She did a great job with Regulus Black, Voldemort and James. I think the best characterization was Lupin, and Lily's relationship with him.. I've never really felt as strongly attached to Lupin as I do now.

I'm also amazed at the length of this story.. It's 146, chapters and over 600,000 words. It's about the length of the first FIVE Harry Potter books, and we all know how big OotP and GoF are.

So check it out. Please.
