Specimen Jars

Oct 26, 2011 14:10

Does anyone here know a good source for specimen jars? I have found some that are like cheap looking jars, but I want ones that are kind of like the ones you see in old museums. I would love all sizes but I really want large jars to do things like fish, or birds, or things like that. If anyone has any sources I would love to get some feedback.

I have often had luck with bottles and jars at American Science and Surplus. http://www.sciplus.com/

The trouble with them is, I usually buy lots more stuff than what I started looking on the site for... and also spend way too many hours reading the descriptions.

i second both this recommendation and the problem with this recommendation. it is very easy to end up with shelves full of science and military surplus veeeeeery quickly once you become a surpy.

also i got a really neat LED pen from their west chicago location. man, i miss having them as local.

however! my boyfriend said he remembers someplace else we saw or got specimen jars that were of nice quality. he just can't remember where that was. if he remembers, i'll post again.

Thrift stores. Just look through the knick knacks and dishes and you will come home with armfuls of amazing apothecary jars. That's where I get all of my jars. The majority of my specimens are behind glass now!

Do you have a Hobby Lobby near you? They have some nice apothecary bottles in both their glass section and in a separate bottle section near the wood crafts. If you sign up to be on their mailing list they send out 40% coupons almost weekly!
I will have to do a collection post very soon then! :)

that is where I get most of my small jars! I am really looking for some of the long jars but I want ones that fit very securely without screwing on. Like the old specimen bottles were.

Seconding thrift stores. You'd be surprised what you find in those places. I try to go a few times a month now.
