So I got to watch an advance screening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows with one of my editors at the magazine I intern at, and it was pretty goddamn sweet. And because I'm a freak, and also because no one reads this anyway, I'm going to write all my thoughts and reactions to the movie here, like I have been for most of the books and movies. If you care at all about watching the movie, don't click the cut, because I'm about to spoil THE SHIT out of this movie.
First of all, just like the book, this movie is dark and goddamn depressing. And of course there's no resolution or happy ending because the story is only halfway done. The movie ends on a strange note because there really isn't a real halfway point in the book, just constant rising action until the final confrontation, which of course does not happen in this part. And of course I left the theater unfulfilled since the shit is just starting to get real or whatever.
But also, just like the book, the movie is non-stop action and I was pretty much riveted the entire time. I seriously would have sat there and watched Part 2 right after. Goddamn it was epic. And scary. And awesome.
Every time I write about any new Harry Potter related thing, I gush and gush about Ron, but he is and will always be my absolute favorite Harry Potter character ever. And the movies have been showing Ron as a worthy an integral part of the trio, but goddamn I love Ron in this movie. I think Rupert Grint does such a good job, his portrayal is pretty much spot on. Ron's anger, jealousy, bravery, loyalty to Harry, love for Hermione, everything I loved everything.
And the Ron/Hermione moments! I tried so hard to contain myself, to not squeal in delight every time there was a Ron/Hermione moment, for fear my editor would think I was nuts. But a huge huge part of the series was Ron and Hermione's feelings for each other, and moment, where they finally finally got it together. Unfortunately we have to wait for Part 2 to see that, but all the great moments they included were pretty much perfect, and I don't know how anyone could ever have denied that they belong together. It was them two from the very very beginning. And so many of the exact lines that I loved from the book were included! I loved loved loved that!
Of course, I must address the dance scene. I think when Harry/Hermione shippers see this they might squeal in delight, but the only reason behind Harry asking Hermione to dance is because she is upset that RON left. And it's an added part to the movie, I thought it was a genuinely sweet part, but my editor did point out that it was a bit strange and kind of fell flat, it was supposed to be super touching but it didn't achieve that fully, which I do kind of agree with. I did think it was cute though, and that Daniel Radcliffe dancing terribly was funny, and I really liked the song choice.
Oh and Dobby's death was just. so. sad. I tried hard to cry in front of my editor, but if Dobby hadn't looked like such a silly character than I wouldn't have stopped myself from shedding a tear. RIP
Emma Watson didn't overact this time! And it only took her seven movies to get it right!
And that torture scene was freaking brutal. Very well acted by Helena Bonham Carter and Emma Watson.
Also on that note, this movie has much more violence and blood and scary parts than the past movies. The scene at the beginning especially, they've definitely done a good job at showing just how evil Voldemort was.
Umm, what else. Not a lot of Ginny, but there wasn't a lot in the book either. And the Ginny/Harry kiss at the beginning wasn't passionate enough to me, maybe just cause when I read that stuff in the book my imagination runs wild, but that kiss needed more fire, especially after the sorry excuse for a kiss that was in the 6th movie. At least this one lasted longer than a second. Oh, and Neville's only line: brilliant. Seriously.
Okay, that's enough crazy for now. But the 7th book definitely needs a reread, I haven't had a chance to reread it yet and now seems like the perfect time.
Oh and I'm def seeing the movie again. Duh.
