I've often wondered what it is that makes people do something special. At the root of my examination of this question are two seemingly identical concepts: inspiration, and motivation.
I've noticed that inspiration and motivation, while linked, are not neccesarily the same thing.
It seems° that people are motivated to continue to do things which they have previously done through habit or ritual. An example of this might be getting up to work in the morning; working out when weary; breathe (alright, that last one's shaky.) Motivation, perhaps, indicates the perserverance of habitual action in the face of weariness or boredom with that action.
It seems that people are inspired to perform a certain task to levels of satisfaction°° beyond any previous definitions. Examples of inspiration are tough to enumerate in words, another trait that can be used to identify it's occurrence, as well as distinguish it, fundamentally, from motivation.
Additionally, inspiration appears to have the added characteristic of recreating itself (albeit in a diminished capacity) in others who experience (first-hand or through appropriate recollection) this task or artifact that has exceeded the previously established levels of satisfaction.
And now the Million Dollar Question:
SO WHAT?
The MDQ of all of this is two-fold in nature. In examining this, I was hoping to figure out how to both deconstruct°°° and recreate moments of motivation and inspiration in times where they were sorely lacking.
Maybe I've gained some insight, maybe I haven't. I guess I could reference more concrete instances of both in an attempt to prove that I have; however, something I've learned is that both of these are so intensely personal, at their core, that trying to truly intimate them in the most basic unit of recordable communication, the word, is something I'll deal with later. Right now I need to be more focused on showing the results, not telling them.°°°°
Deal.
°There will be lots of "seeming," throughout this mess. This comes from the fact that all of these notes and observances come from things I've observed that surprised me (but may not surprise others).
°°Levels of satisfaction, perhaps, defined by motivation? This bears further investigation.
°°°Note here:
deconstruct not equal to
destruct °°°°Then stop writing, and start doing, loudmouth.
