Two Things:

Dec 06, 2006 11:16

1. I'm very pleased with my new icon. It's pretty much exactly what I look like right now (minus the halo).

2. I'm doing a presentation to my "Information Technology for Libraries and Information Agencies" about online social networking services and what a public library's policies and engagement with them should be.

I'm proposing that the library create a MySpace page from which you can get updates on library and community happenings and access the catalog and other library resources. I'm also behind having workshops in the library to teach folks about different social networking services and calm people down about them. We're also proposing staff training, so library staff can help people who want to use different services on library computers. That, of course, also means that I think filtering is dumb and shouldn't be used in libraries.

When I say "Social Networking Services," I mean things like:

LiveJournal, MySpace, Friendster, Facebook, Flickr, IM, Wikis, Blogger, chat, and so on. Any framework that facilitates interpersonal connection and communication online.

What I would love is to have some testamonials from you guys about how you use these things, if you use any I haven't thought of, and what affect they have on your life. I might even use what you say in my powerpoint, or on the website (I make websites now!).

Thanks!
and
Love,
Ellie
