I am interesting in RP'ing in WoW (I think) but I have no idea how to start/what to do. I have been told to just make up a story and act it out... but what does that involve ( Read more... )

The best thing to do is check your server's forum for information on websites and custom channels that cater to RPers. On Horde and Alliance side of many RPer servers, they will have a chat channel for you to /join so you can talk Out of Character (OOC) with other RPers, as a way of getting to know them, finding out where events are, and fishing for spur-of-the-moment RP or guilds. Some even have wikis or other websites dedicated to the RPers of that particular server. Check the official WoW forum for that server first, or ask aloud in the General chat. Someone will contact you about it.

I know this sounds like a silly tip, but also make sure you're actually on an RP server. Trying to RP on a non-RP server will lead to some interesting and unwanted situations.

Get yourself an RSP. These are add-ons made to show people that you are on the server for RP, and thus available for it at random moments. Popular ones include MyRoleplay and FlagRSP. These addons also allow you to write a specific description for your character, and give you ways to indicate that you are currently In-Character (IC), or not in the mood for RP.

Lastly, try to find a decent RP guild. It's not necessary to get RP, depending on the server you're on, but it can be very helpful in the long run.

As far as your character's story goes, you can start making that up as you go along. One of my personal pet peeves in RP is when someone's character gives mine their life story in our first encounter. It's unnecessary and prettymuch eliminates some of our reason for future interactions. That said, it is a good idea to think up a decent background for your character. The brief one you've come up with sounds perfectly fine to me. It's a starting point, and once you actually start RPing with others, you'll build off it just fine. You'll also want to consider how that background has affected their personality/how they interact with others. Try not to make your character too standoffish, as that will lower your chances of getting RP on a regular basis.
