Hey, I want you all to be aware of an identity theft scam.
I recently got a call from "something...Visa" a few months ago. I was under the impression that it had something to do with money for school. I gave them a lot of personal information, but at the end of the call they asked for my Social Security Number. This is how I knew it was bad. NEVER GIVE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER TO SOMEONE CALLING YOU. I was still nervous that they might have enough information to do something, though. After all, they had my name, address, phone number, birthdate, school name, and my Dad's name. I called my bank and told them what happened. They told me that as long as they didn't have my SSN, I was ok.
Today, I got another call from the same company. I wasready though. I made the woman tell me the name of their company and to spell it for me. I also asked from where she was calling, and for a contact phone number. Although I couldn't find the company on the Better Business Bureau Site by the city and state, I found their main address by the 1-800 number she gave me.
The company calls themselves "Clout Visa." Their actual name is "Clout Financial Services." Their main location is in Madison,WI. They have an unsatisfactory record with the BBB due to unanswered complaints. Also, right underneath their profile is tips about identity theft.
Be aware fo these issues. People like them think students are young and therefore stupid. Prove them wrong! Don't give them important, personal info over the phone!!!
