Once again Pixar has demonstrated that they better understand love than all the fucking assholes in Hollywood who write "romantic" comedies put together ( Read more... )

I do think that part of this discussion deals with the fact that I think we come at film from a slightly different direction...or something...and I don't mean to sound high and mighty about it AT ALL.

But here's a good example. You mention romantic comedies. Honestly, I find romantic comedies (based on previews and the "popular" ones I've been dragged to) to be terrible. Neither romantic, nor comedic.

There certainly are exceptions. High Fidelity is a romantic comedy that I would consider one of my top movies ever. Grosse Point Blank is a romantic comedy near and dear to my heart.

Hmm...both of those have John Cusak...I wonder if he's an essential ingredient in a successful romantic comedy?:) Both of those ARE stereotypical "romantic comedies for guys" too...so what do I know.

Anyway, I don't go to every movie expecting it to be Hamlet reborn...nor is that what I want all the time. I love a good cheesy action flick, I love a good silly comedy...I even love a good romance.

I just find so many of them god awful. It's my personal opinion, I know. But I'd rather see "In the Mood for Love" a thousand times than go to most hollywood "romance" movies, because I think it's actually romantic. I'd rather watch the Cusak movies I just mentioned, or Intolerable Cruelty a billion times than be subjected to There's Something About Mary (which I walked out of), because I think they're actually funny and romantic too.

I certainly don't think that's too much to ask from something calling itself a "romantic comedy."

I don't demand excellence, I demand people ASPIRE to excellence...because that's how we get the good stuff...and, in my opinion, there are many "filmmakers" in Hollywood who haven't been trying for a long time. If they weren't excellent, I reserve the right to tell them (and others) why...not like they'd listen to me anyway...

This sounds far more confrontational than it means to be. I certainly don't want to put down your taste in movies (which is I think inclusive of mine, but broader) or attack you. I'm just trying to explain where I'm coming from.

And when it comes to Kids movies, I've been keeping a mental list of films to show what Diana and I call "our hypothetical future children." Films that are sweet, touching, make you feel real emotion (again though, not demanding Shakespeare), exciting without being scary (they're sub-divided into mentally assessed appropriate ages in my head too), teach wonder and imagination, and treat children like young, developing adults rather than assuming that because they're young they're idiots who "won't understand the good stuff."

I think there are many of those movies out there...and many of them ARE Disney movies. I just don't think I've seen much from Disney in that vein for a while (for a while meaning 90s-early 2000's...I haven't seen their more recent stuff...although, like I said, I'm planning on giving them another chance). Many are Pixar movies. Many are Miyazaki movies (My Neighbor Totoro, for example is one of my favorite kids movies).

<3 I wasnt trying to attack you either and I dont see your response that way either. I understand your point and I know we all have a right to our opinions. I guess part of my point was that its kida hard for me to look down at Disney (although I know the people that run it now are the most greedy ass bastards ever!) but that its kinda unfair to judge when the heart of what it was you know before the greed is gone now. I hate all these stupid sequels on the classics... how many Little mermaids do we need and Aladdins..ugh!!!

I see you point. I guess thats why they make different genres to please so every has something to like and hate!

Also OMG John Cusak /hawt! lol

Oh and as for what you show your children... stay away from The Secret of Nimh...OMG scarry even as an adult.
Anywho i really should link my lj to an email account i actually use! =)
