History is important. Studying it and (hopefully) learning from other peoples' horrible mistakes in the past keeps us from repeating those mistakes, and moves us a little further along the road of progress to a happier, healthier, more productive society. That's the theory, anyway. I've made occasional posts about the theory behind the organization ( Read more... )

This sounds a lot like some of the stuff I was reading recently regarding the Boskone from Hell and its aftermath. I wonder how many similar incidents there have been in SF fandom, and if we'll ever see it happen in the anime realm.

It's unfortunately been very common in SF fandom, and I'm doing my best to make sure it doesn't happen in anime fandom.

(edit: well, the part I feel responsible for, anyway)

Thank you for the history lesson Kevin. I hope to learn more from other conventions mistakes so that my own con,(Wausaubi Con) will be more successful and more enjoyable it's first year, without as many hiccups. Thank you for the advice. David

You're welcome. Don't hesitate to give me a holler if you have any questions I might be able to answer for you - but after, what, three years with AD Security? I think you probably have a pretty firm grip on the fundamentals. Keep it simple, don't try to do too much, and you'll be fine.

after reading the comments on the crosspost: someone doesn't get it. the lesson from this (and Boskone, etc.) is DON'T DO THIS if you don't want to kill your convention.

one of the reasons I'm Internets-inactive lately (at least in terms of fandom that isn't baseball) is the vast amount of people who don't get it even if someone was handing out little plushie Its at the door. I can't facepalm any more than I already am.

Yeah. Like politics, fandom sometimes forces you to associate with the kind of people you'd normally cross the street to avoid.

Yeah, I remember reading that article (DDB on who was a "real" fan). It was the final straw for me regarding MNSTF / Minicon. I didn't see me in who they were looking for, so left.

(I've posted this on FB, but thought I should post it here.)

Good idea. Not all LJ people read Facebook, and vice versa.
