It never really mattered to Reka. There were good times and bad times in her life but they weren’t bound to any particular part of the day. She preferred mornings recently though, mostly because it was the most refreshing part of the day in Los Angeles, where she lived. And it wasn’t different in Switzerland, especially not on a bright summer morning like this one. Réka made her way to the stables, to take a ride as was her use since they arrived to Switzerland. A saddled horse was waiting for her as each morning... with a small difference.
“Where’s Janine?” Réka asked the groom as she was staring at the elderly gelding. She knew this slow, well-handled gelding was usually given un-skilled riders; while Janine was a fiery, Arab mare, her favorite and the one she used to ride at mornings.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Winters.” The boy looked troubled. “I’m under orders...”
“From whom, for Heaven’s sake?” Réka started getting annoyed. The groom did not answer though it wasn’t hard to guess who was behind this constraint and also the others she experienced last days.
Once she was pregnant, Hsu Danmei had no intention to risk the life of his child, but he went too far this time. Réka turned on her heels and stormed back to the building, looking neither right nor left while she reached her apartment. She slammed the door behind her back and threw herself to the bed.
He had no right doing this!
Sliding into the comfort of pillows and covers, Réka calmed down. Somewhere deep inside, she knew Hsu was right. She was responsible not only for her own life but also her child’s. Réka just wished... well, she did not even know what she was wishing for. Her mood was swinging between deep depression and euphoria for days even though she did not realize.
She was just lying there, staring into space for a long time, before she curled around herself and drifted into sleep.
