I was wondering where others got their best ideas of characterisation from. Is it from the TV programme, reading spin offs such as official books or comics or fanfic?
I do find that for me the written word says in my head longer, and gives be a better idea of characterisation, also as far as spin offs are concerned unless written by Joss himself, I dont find them all that great mostly. I find fanfic writers capture the various aspects of the characters better than a lot of the books I have read.
I am wondering this as I have started watching Supernatural and firefly. While I do have to watch the programmes to get a visual in my head when reading fanfic, the writers of fanfic do capture them so well.
Of course when I read original works I do visualise the characters myself, and am often disappointed in any film adaptations as they do not match up to my images. One of the reasons I was not keen on the "Lord of the Rings" films, I had them characters in my head already.
How does everyone else feel? Is it the visuals or the written word for you?
