Dear Peter!
First of all, we would like to express once again our gratitude for the festival of creativity, kindness and openness, gifted to us last year. The WOMAD festival, which took place in Pyatigorsk, not only produced an unforgettable impression on tens of thousands of Russian people, but also clearly showed how Russia is integrated into the global cultural context. We are most sincerely thankful for this. We are confident that WOMAD on Russian soil was a success for you as well, anyway, you called this experience positive enough and worthy of continuation.
For this reason, the information appearing today that the people of Russia could be deprived of the festival causes bewilderment and alarm. To The North Caucasus Development Corporation was sent a letter signed by the directors of WOMAD International Mike Large and Chris Smith. Although observing decorum, its authors nevertheless insist on the impossibility of holding the festival in Russia due to a number of emerging circumstances, including Russia’s “aggression” against Ukraine.
We cannot deny your colleagues the right to their own point of view, as in the modern world the possibility to freely express an opinion is one of the fundamental values. We are not going to impose on you our understanding of the situation - after all personal views and beliefs should be respected without reference to the degree of their rationalism. The only thing we would like to dwell on is the strange transformation of personal political estimations into decisions not only defining the destiny of the WOMAD festival, but also directly influencing the cultural dialogue between the nations of the world.
During thirty years of the festival development you invariably underlined its essentially apolitical status. WOMAD is a territory free from political disputes, a territory of friendship and mutual understanding - this approach has always been shown by the organizers, and it made the festival really attractive.
That is why, dear Peter, we address you -the founder and the inspirer of the brightest world-famous cultural event. We ask you to consider the decision made by the management in a fair and unbiased way, to calculate the risks of transforming a free and open festival into a tool of confrontation. If your position as a fair and sincere civil activist is still strong, if the values of good and truth are still important for you, we do not doubt that you will find a means to disavow the decision made behind your back, which destroys the fruits of many years of your work.
