2013, the rear in review...

I'm only 9 days late, but thought I'd put in the yearly summary since last year was pretty major. My parents had been bugging me for ages to get out of my comfort zone and I'll freely admit that my work was not as exciting as it once was.

For the first six months of the year I got myself seconded to one of the research groups looking after their super computers in a nice new purpose build super computer building. (That is a whole different story) But this was sort of within the same zone.

So around the middle of the year I got myself a new job 400km north of Perth in Geraldton. Bought a new house, sold my car, bought a new car, moved, said goodbye to a housemate of 10 years. It was a hell of a lot of change that happened over a period of 6 weeks. I'm not going to do it again. If/when I do the next major change, I'll pace it out a bit better.

The new job is interesting to say the least. I'm based in Geraldton, but site is another 350km north east in the middle of no where. I've been in it now for about four months. To be honest, I still haven't made up my mind about the job. It has a lot of potential, but is very different from life at the uni.

It moves at a very different pace. I'm use to upgrading a server room of 40 live machines over the course of a week. Now I have 6 servers to upgrade, it took 4 weeks to get permission to do the first 5; over a month later and I'm still waiting for the ok to do the last one. There are lots of things that I don't agree with and when I ask why, I'm told that's how it's always been done. Tip - That is not a valid answer.

I'm back to wondering about jobs overseas. I don't think I'll be running off any time soon, but I'm not quite sure if this is going to be my dream job. It is interesting, but I can't quite decide if I'm comfortable in it.

So for year I'm up here in sunny Geraldton. I'm now comfortable in this new house. Compared to Perth, it's huge and has a view. If/when I move back down to Perth, moving into something else will be a shock. And did I mention my daily commute is 7 minutes? That is very cool.

I'm pondering trips for this year. Slight problem that I don't have any holidays at the moment, but I'll worry about that when I actually figure out where I want to go. Any suggestions?
