I finally finished off the Age of the Five Trilogy by
Trudi Canavan today. I had read her Black Magician Trilogy a while back and rather enjoyed it, so I got the Age of the Five Trilogy, I made it through the first book quickly, then I just got bogged down in the second book (Sorry Trudi) The middle third took me ages to get through, I'd read a bit, put it down and a month later find myself thinking, "Maybe it's improved" and polish off the next chapter, then pause again.
Anyway, earlier this week things clicked and I'm not sure if the book improved or if I got in a better head space and I finished off the book Thursday evening and started the third book on Friday.
It is now Saturday evening and the third book is finished. Yes, I did not do much today aside from reading.
It made me remember how good a good book can be. There is something strangely satisfying about reading one.
The book, and trilogy itself is good. Ok, the second book is a little slow in places, but the third picks up. There are a few twists and turns and more than one or two sub plots that do not actually add much to the story. In hindsight, they could be either removed or pared down. Thinking about them, I suspect Trudi may have had some other things in mind which never quite came to fruition. Sort of like putting the pieces on the board, but then making a different move.
I guessed the correct plot twist pretty early on. I began to get my suspicions in the second book and about half way through the third I was pretty much sure of it.
Leaves me wondering what I will read now. There is a prequel to her other trilogy which is tempting, although the ending to that trilogy annoyed me. All the way through the books there was a certain thing which was mentioned over and over and could have been used to provide the final solution, but in the end it was not, which I found frustrating. It was a little like the heroes find themselves pinned down behind enemy lines and just off to the side there is a machine gun, which they can see and know all about, but they choose to throw rocks at the approaching forces instead.
There is also another trilogy, again tempting. Maybe I shall order it in.
Any suggestions folks?
