"Sir, I found something that might be of interest."
Captain Fred Chambers just perked a brow and looked at Randy. "Why did I have a feeling you'd say that?" he said, as the intern walked over and handed him a file.
Randy laughed softly. "Because I've been working for you for almost a decade and you know me by now, sir."
"I do know you well enough to know I'm not going to get you to stop being formal with me." Chambers flipped a few pages and then saw the date stamp on the top and just turned and glanced at Randy. "You dug through half the file room to dig up a case from twenty-four years ago?"
"Um..." Randy wasn't sure what the right answer was here. "Yes?"
This did not entirely surprise Chambers, who, in adhering to the rule of thumb his subordinate had just cited, had to remind himself that this was the young man whose very first project had been to reorganize said entire file room, even though it took him a week with overtime to do it. That no one knew that room better than Randy, and that Randy would go to the end of the earth if it found one piece of information that might make his day easier.
"You're insane, Randy," he said. "But I say that from a place of love."
