tree removal

a tree service came by today and removed the tree outside my window, along with the tree beside it and some other trees. they're supposed to come back on monday and remove some more then too. there are now no trees near my window.

i have mixed feelings about the trees outside my window being gone. sure, they were trees, and it was pleasant to see tree branches outside my bedroom window. but they definitely weren't my favorite kind of tree. i'm not really familiar with the kind they were. i was told they were birches. whatever they were, they drooped almost like weeping willows and had a washed-out look to them which i found a bit dreary, especially since that kind of tree predominated the property.

i was actually thinking recently that i'd like them to replace some of the trees of that type across the pool area from me with other trees. i'd also been notified that the tree service was doing work today. but last year they'd mainly just trimmed off branches, so i was surprised when they actually removed more than a couple of trees. i found out at the rental office afterward that they were planning on removing all of that kind of tree from the property, although that might not end up happening. the tallest tree - by a fair margin - on the property is of this type, and i certainly hope they keep that one at least.

anyway, the view from my window has now opened up quite a bit, but a lot of what i now have a clear view of is ugly. at least, it's ugly by day. by night the open view is pretty cool. but i also don't have the privacy - day or night - of being somewhat hidden away behind a tree when i'm in my bedroom.

i also noticed that a lot more light comes into my bedroom during the day now. that is good when i'm awake. but i keep drifting towards being nocturnal, and even the light that made it through the blinds before was interfering with my sleep.

on the plus side again, the tree got all kinds of stuff onto my desk and into my bedroom whenever i opened my window, even through the screen and even when i opened the window only for a few hours. it was sort of like huge amounts of dust. so it's good to not have that problem any more. i heard that the trees dropping stuff and giving off pollen was causing a lot of other problems too, even with air conditioning units.

the tree removal may have displaced some squirrels also. i saw a squirrel and one of its young on the roof of the rental office. i don't remember ever seeing them there before. they didn't seem very disturbed, however, and were playing and grooming each other.
