A Day In The Life Of.......

Mar 22, 2010 21:05

had to be up early today for a phone interview( Inspector job in Raliegh NC). I Did put pants on, just in case. I think it went okay, as those things can trying to impress three people without being able to hear or see them during the conversation.

Watched the sleet come down for awhile, got ready for work and left with plenty of time and a cup of coffee. Stopped for gas(damn, How much!?!??!) and went on my mery way. Was on I-75 when everyone slowed down and I started seeing debris in the road....looked like a blown tire that had a Great happy ending......so i slowing and ducking and weaving and I see a car cheating by pulling into the right median to avoid the stuff. I'm thinking "you get No points for that move" as I passed and saw.....no driver.....no wait, driver is leaning way over in car...... no wait....driver is slumped and oh dear. Car proceeds to smash into wall as I slow and pull over and looking back just in time to see semi-truck roll trailer over said car.

Now, I wish someone had video'd this....I slam on the breaks, jump out, and toss off my leather trench(it was feakin cold!) and start jogging towards the scene expecting the worse. I wave to the driver of the truck who looks like he's thinking "was that a bump in the road??" and head past another driver on his cell. I called to him and asked "you calling 911??" and he said "Yes!". I ran to the car expecting the worst and find a poor elderly woman completly out of it. It dawned on me then that I was in uniform and no wonder everyone just waved me on. She wasn't responding but the trailer had rolled over the hood and she seemed mostly unhurt...just "not there." I think she had suffered some sort of attack. I did the whole first response thing as I tried to turn off the friggin car that was still making some really strange noises(it was a hybrid, I thought maybe it was gonna sprout another hood) That had no keys. and a friggin "if you push this" map didn't help. Where the hell is "P" to push and put it in park!?!??!!? Well, poor Betty(I got her name as I rumaged her purse for id and/or meds, hey, I Do supervise searching stuff for a living!) was luckily still breathing albiet with a weak pulse so i didn't have to drag her out and do cpr(now That would have been dicey on an old gal!) when the police and soon after fire department showed up. I had been calling her name out the whole time I had it and the last time, right before I handed the scene over to the other responders, she looked up and at me like she heard me.

So, Betty, I hope you recover nicely. And you should be grateful that that tire was in the road because it slowed Everyone down enough that when you came back into traffic it wasn't as bad as us all driving 65mph.

But buy a damn car with keys next time!?!???!
