Professor Layton and the Curious Village

This weekend howlsthunder and I went to Target to look for new comforter covers, which we found. Then we went over to the GameStop that is a short walk. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, though I always look for the Nintendo DS game "Electroplankton" which is very hard to find. No luck but I continued to look for some thing interesting to play either on the Wii or DS.

Well, I came across the game "Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box" which is the sequel to the game "Professor Layton and the Curious Village". I remember reading that both games had really positive reviews on Amazon. They are both mystery/puzzle games. I was hoping to find the first game and with much searching I finally found 'PLATCV' on a lower shelf. So I decided to buy it and give it a shot. I am really glad I did cause I can't stop playing.

The game gets you thinking. Some are easy and some are hard. When you aren't solving a puzzle you are wrapped up in a mystery plot of some sorts and are sent off to find things related to the mystery. The town you are in is full of citizens that love puzzles and ask your help in solving their puzzle or you have to solve a puzzle in order to advance in the game. You want to look at everything cause you end up finding "hint coins" that are hidden throughout the game. You can spend the coins on hints in helping solve really tough puzzles that might come your way.

When you solve a puzzle you get points or "picarats" as they are called in the game. Example, a puzzle might be 10 out of 10 picarats. If you don't solve it the first time, you loose picarats in that puzzle that you could have earned. So then the next time you try and solve it, the puzzle will be 8 of 10 picarats. So that is more incentive to really think about solving a puzzle on the first attempt or using your hint coins for a hint.

I am not even half way through the game and there are some puzzles I haven't solved yet. There are times I have to close my DS and sit and think about a puzzle. I went to bed thinking about one puzzle that had me stumped. I even at one point had to get out paper and pencil to figure one out! I am liking this PLATCV game a lot. I recommend it to anyone who likes puzzles and mysteries. Don't get discouraged by the cover art on the game box. As cute as it seems, it is really a lot of fun. One of the best games I have bought for the DS.
