I Second That Emotion

Hey gang.

At the moment I'm listening to a weird mix of Bob Dylan and Motown at an outdoor coffee shop in Sausalito, CA (small, highbrow community across the San Francisco Bay from the city proper), after barely surviving an attempt at skating here using a borrowed longboard. I just transited with the ship from Morro Bay (another amazingly picturesque coastal town in the middle of nowhere), and tomorrow we head to San Fran itself. Pictures will be up on Facebook pretty soon.

The transit was pretty hairy, but not a lot more than usual. We were out for about 28 hours, and the seas were 10-20 feet and about 15 seconds apart. It was about 40 degrees with 25mph winds and salt spray- but in other words, it was fucking marvelous. You've not lived until you've lost both sides of the horizon to waves that are taller than you. You don't much sleep, though...

I was also given the honor of being on helm when we steered under the Golden Gate Bridge. That may not mean a lot to a Californian, but to an east coast kid like me, it's pretty fucking legendary.

How did I get here? Me, of all people?
I'm having a great time, organizational and confidence issues aside. The parent organization for these boats works them and their crews to death, and I never feel like I'm good enough for my job, but whatev. I'm still working on a fucking tall ship. All my complaints are ultimately moot. I'm feeling pretty damn fine.

Announcements:

I have a kind of mohawk
I'm terrified I won't get a job on Niagara because I didn't get  the one on Spirit of South Carolina
I need to start writing again
I miss talking to my old friends and wish i had a fucking day off more than once a month to call them
I will probably be back in GA in a month.

That's all the time I've got. Time to skate haphazardly back to the ship! Wish me luck.

Love,

-J.P.
