Ever in motion the [spoiler]

I started this as a comment in someone's lj and realised it probably would be better as a post in mine so...

About the news that Rose is leaving at the end of season two...

To quote Douglas Adams' famous line: Don't panic.

Companions leaving is something that happens, even more often than the Doctor regenerating (average Companion lasts two seasons; average Doctor lasts three) so yeah, you do get used to it after a while. Although I will admit it is a bit more of a crap shoot with new Companions than with new Doctors.

I love Rose, she's right up there with Ace and Leela as my favourite female Companions (Jack pretty much has the spot locked up for favourite male) but I have this season been beginning to get a few "It's getting close to time" thoughts so I'm not at all surprised to hear that she is leaving.

And I'll tell people what I told them when there was flailing over Eccleston leaving -- give it a chance. The show has a long track record in being able to pull off this kind of thing and while there have been a few misses (*koff* Mel *koff* Perri *koff*) generally they hit the nail right on the head with what the new Companion should be.

I know they'll be having a new female Companion for the Doctor posthaste but I'm kinda hoping to get at least a few episodes where it's just the Doctor and Jack (assuming that he is still going back to DW for s3). Although I am disappointed that it looks like we won't ever be getting the OT3 back together.

Doctor Who has always been a show where people leaving is very much a part of the storyline; it's one of its strengths and one of the reasons that the current season is the 28th. Will I be sad to see Rose go? Some, yes, but as I said it's been beginning to feel like it's time. Mostly right now I'm looking forward to seeing how she goes -- I'm sure RTD is going to give her a brilliant exit and I can't wait to see what it is. And to see who they get (both characterwise and actresswise) to be the next Companion.

Aside from Jack, that is. I'm still hoping for lots more Jack in the TARDIS adventures too. ;)

canon thoughts, doctor who
