How a Nonfunctional Light Socket Nearly Killed Me

So the night before last, I watched the movie, "The Exorcist" for the first time. It was an awesome movie, and just as scary as people say it is. And, being me, scary movies tend to stick with me, especially when I go downstairs at night to brush my teeth. Alone, in a dark house with no one else on that floor, into a room with a mirror in it (a hangover creepiness from watching Twin Peaks).

So when I went downstairs to brush my teeth last night, I was thinking of a demonic face that would occasionally flash quickly on the screen during the Exorcist. And I was thinking how much I would NOT like to see such a thing, and was nearly too nervous to go into the bathroom.

So after thinking about how cute my cat is, I pretty much banished the demon worries, brushed my teeth, and went back upstairs to my room.

My husband was already in bed, the overhead light was turned off and only one of the night lamps was on, and I sat down at the computer to check something before heading to bed, when I noticed a flash from the right side of the room, where there are NO lights, no windows, nothing that could cause light. A flash that could, conceivably, be a deathly white demon face.

"My imagination," I thought. Nervously. And then it happened again.

I slowly turned to my right, fully expecting now to see a demon... and when I realized what it was, nearly died with relief.

The light in the room outside our door isn't working right. Something's wonky with the wiring. I turned it on, remembered it wasn't working, and turned it off again. But when my husband went to brush his teeth, he turned it on and left it on.

That light was off but flickering occasionally, and reflecting in the mirror on the right-hand side of the room.

The sheer terror that flickering light caused me surely took at least a few years off of my life.
