lol honestly I agree. I put on a facade in my journal about wah declawed cats could potentially have problems (lol 1 in a million chance tho) and actually I will declaw any cats I get. But I don't like to publically announce that because I have (well had, I removed a few) people that were active members of SPO and preachers of "feline rights" or whatever the crap. I wasn't in the mood to get into a bitchfest so I acted like I was on their side.
I agree with you, I have NEVER even met a bad tempered declawed cat. Growing up we owned a lot of cats. Many of them were declawed. None of them had issues. They were sweet and still acted like they had claws, they didn't even know. My sister has the most awesome cat and he's declawed. I mean, this cat thinks he's a dog. And he knows how to shake. Yeah, awesome cat.
And to add to your personality thing... I have known PLENTY of cats who are not declawed and have been total assholes.
Also I love the SPO community all in all, its so fun. The bitchfests and whatnot. And genuinely stupid things do get posted from time to time and hey, I like to bitch.
I have you beat. Cecilia, the girl we work for, has a male cat who's probably 8-10 months old. -He plays fetch-. He had a fluffy square thing that he lost at our place when we were babysitting him, but you could play fetch with him for hours. The funny thing, it wasn't toss and the cat runs after. He would run after it, pick it up, and bring it back. Usually he would set it down next to us but there were times he even nudged it into our hands. But, since he lost the fluff square, he now does it with rolled up straw wrappings. One of our co-workers brings her dog to work, so we think he picked up the habit from her.
I like reading the SPO community, there are actually some really good stories that come across and I was actually thinking about joining to post a few of my own stories. Like one my dad told me. They were driving behind a guy who had a, no older than 4 months old, labrador puppy on the back of his -open bed truck-. It was one of those utility hauling trucks you see welders with. The puppy wasn't tied up to anything and was sliding around the bed of the truck like it was an ice rink. Needless to say, the puppy fell off, and the owner kept driving. This was going at 45+MPH aswell. They pulled over and got the puppy, took him straight to the vet. Unfortunately the little guy didn't make it. When my dad told me about it, I was appalled.
But yeah, anyways, I like the SPO community, the stories about the stupid people going into vet clinics and petsmart and crap like that make me lol. But the activists on there, oh god, the make me want to smack them. >.< And seriously, -meat only diets-!? What are these people made of? Solid gold? And they put down science diet like it was a bad plague. It is sold at veterinary clinics, is it really -that- bad? I'd think with the price and the fact that vets sell the damn stuff would class it higher than the cheap purina brands they sell at Walmart. And I seriously don't see the problem with purina anyways, tbh. Tiger, Amethyst and Sixpack are all fed Cat Chow. They love it and they don't have any dietary problems from it.
Anyways, like I said, it's just the "omfgpoorkitty" thing that bugs me to all hell. They don't even take the time to get the story or anything about the cat. But if the cat is declawed it's -automatically- omfgabuse. *headdesk*
Well I can be pretty anal about some things. I do agree those cat foods are shit. Sure Science Diet was manufactured a little better with the animals well being in mind, but more than that a lot of these companies are looking for profit. They use the least of high grade food that they can and then stuff it full of corn- a filler that cats and dogs can't even digest- so they're not getting a lot of nutrition out of their food. They have to eat more of it to get the vitamins they need and because the corn passes so quickly they are hungry more often and can overeat.
Granted there are extreme cases and of course there are cases where the animals are completely fine. Like your cats. And my mom feeds her cat Purina. My mom's cat DOES have digestive issues but they could be due to old age and/or the food. She's been fed the same stuff forever but I did tell my mom to switch her to a holistic food brand to see if it helps.
I will SWEAR by holistic foods, and sadly there is not a lot out there. (Blue Buffalo, Eagle Pack and Chicken Soup are the main ones I know of) It can be harder to find and yes it can cost more but it can do wonders for the health and even mental well being of the animals. My ferret gets holistic kitten food (high in protein which ferts need) rather than any of the ferret food which I think is all trash. And a problem is, not all vets and animal lovers will do the research to realize the virtues of holistic brands. They simply don't know better and preach what they were taught or what they were paid to endorse.
As an aside I've also known some pretty cold-hearted vets that really DON'T have the animals best interest in mind. Maybe they used to and they got jaded, ya know? So some of them will be really terrible sources for pet food advice because they just don't care anymore. :\
All that information aside I do not necissarily support meat only diets. They are cool and I totally support some meat every now and again for a treat, but it is way too expensive and honestly a waste of money to persue. Dogs are content to eat GARBAGE. They really don't know the difference between things as much as people think they might. At least I don't think they do. They're not people. Animals really don't care what they're eating as long as they think it tastes good and it fills them up. Its a human trait pet lovers are trying to attach to animals that really doesn't hold up. They're not picky about food like us. (But all that said, we do have to watch what they eat of course because things can be bad for them.)
Ramble ramble ramble...
Anyway, I think you should join the community. The drama can be fun, the flip outs are insane to read and there are some real stories worth their salt to read about and get upset over. And of course it is nice to vent and share when you hear a stupid story or witness one. Like that poor puppy. Augh, that sucks so bad. If you carry an animal in the back of a truck you fricken crate it and tie that crate down unless you're like... driving around on a farm and going 5mph or something. But I would never say just "tie the dog up" they could easily choke themselves rolling around back there tied to a leash.
lol in addition to your last sentence, do you spend any amount of time on Craigslist? People are CRAZY. Seriously if people advertise their cat as being declawed psycho animal rights people will actually flag the post because the animal was "abused"... and honestly they're just hurting the animal more when they do that! The animal is trying to find a new home and if the ad is constantly being taken down that animal will wind up in a shelter or worse. *facepalm*
