I really miss having ferrets. They are such the essence of silly and play. But I know that it is better for my long-term emotional health. I can still miss 'em though.

Sorry, I was just tossing this off the cuff.
Not having ferrets is better for my long-term emotional health because ferrets don't live long enough. They're around long enough for me to grow attached but then they die too soon. A ferret only lives 5-10 years. Over five ferrets, I had my heart wrenched each time. It's likely better for me to not form that strong attachment just for it to go away so soon.
Does that make more sense? P.S. I've changed the icon on this post to be more appropriate. I posted it using LJ-Talk...

My dogs are just as goofy (but much harder to transport) and expensive (vet bill wise) but require a lot less washing, no cage cleaning, etc. And they aren't as much trouble -- they don't go around knocking things off of tables or shelves for the fun of seeing them fall.
But my little Balrog used to go to every convention with me, out with me every night, etc. She would curl up and sleep in my cloak hood while I walked around.
My silver Thorn knew how to walk on a leash and loved to go walk in the woods.
Pooka was a sweet mommas boy who loved to sleep in my lap.
Aeris was the neat freak who had to stow all of the toys.
Loki just slept most of the time and wasn't much trouble at all.
Orson and Puck liked to play with my mom's poodle.
I was going to post a link to a craigslist posting with two ferrets that need new homes.
But it has pictures and they might remind you of something so I won't. Isn't it the fun and love worth the eventual and inevitable pain? If it wasn't, none of us would have pets or lovers or friends.
I am not a fan of them, and I will not live with them. Also, given how my dog reacts to the cats, a loose ferret would make the house completely unlivable.
