Well, I took my car for an
e-check yesterday.......and my car didn't pass.
This is such a scam!!!
My check engine lite is on, so they automatically failed the car. Here's my thoughts on this.
Echeck tests for emissions. They have now started a new check for cars 96 and newer - they just plug into the on-board computer and if the CEL is on, then they fail you. Simple as that. If the check engine light is on for any other reason it doesn't matter - they fail you anyway.
Suffice it to say that I have to have my EGR valve replaced. It's simple repair (the part cost $126 - which is HIGHWAY ROBBERY) and I can do it myself. But here's the trick and the money maker that the gov't has instituted by putting this stupid plan in place.
The on-board computer has to be reset after changing the EGR valve or else the CEL will stay on and the car will fail again. A regular person cannot reset the OBC system themselves. You have to have a OBDII scanner to reset the code. So you have to go to a mechanic to get this done. The cheapest I found to have it done is $337!!!!!!!!!!!!
So here's the pattern:
Lawmakers make laws to have emissions checked
You try to repair your car yourself
You can't
You can't because you have to take it to a mechanic for the damn computer reset
Car manufacturers make vehicles this way so you HAVE to take them to the dealer
Gov't assists mechanics and car manufacturers in making more money due to this CRAP
This really pisses me off - this has nothing to do with making the air safer. It has to do with lining people's pocketbooks with MORE MONEY.
Gotta love the way the gov't takes care of it's citizens......
