I have a big beef with something that is going on in a comm or two in which I participate ( Read more... )

Two things come to mind:

1/ money is involved. I have seen very sensible people act incredibly irrational when money is a factor. Add to this the fact that people in the community you are referring to often admit that they are low on funds and STILL buy superfluous items then you have a recipe for extreme panic.

2/ A lot of people are still very suspicious of the internet as a means of communication. They love it when it makes life easier, but at the back of their minds they are suspicious of online transactions and any kind of online relationship. So as soon as they hear something negative, they're all ready to believe it as this is the internet, and we all know no one online is who they say they are, right? therefore they can't be trusted! I understand that online communication is a good medium to lie through but I think it's erroneous to be more suspicious of online actions than offline.

In regards to the situation you're referring to, I do think it looks very bad and I would be upset if the same were happening to me. However, I don't know what the time frame is here, and it could be that more time is needed before a decision about the individual's intentions are decided upon. I run a very tight ship with ANY online business, and I expect communication to be good and items to be delivered promptly unless someone has contacted me in advance to let me know there are delays or personal problems taking effect. I also try not to take things public until I am 100% sure that I have been conned or treated badly.

So although I am sympathetic to the potential victim and do suspect that the seller is acting poorly, I wouldn't have taken it public until I was 100% sure and had already made moves to prosecute or receive a refund through paypal.

I agree with you. What bothers me is that not all avenues were exhausted before this was brought public. There are two situations like this going on right now - I don't know if you are aware of the other, but in one of them the other side of the story hasn't even be TOLD. Ppl are making judgments based on one side alone - and one of them is a moderator! What the hell happened to innocent until proven guiilty? And how the hell does one prove anything unless all sides are aired/ told? And for someone "in charge" of something to take a side is a dangerous thing to do.

*headdesk thud*

I'm not aware of the second situation, no. :/ I'm assuming this is in the same community, though?

I agree on all counts, and especially about the moderator's involvement. I am sure they are doing what they think is right but when you're in a position of authority you need to be fair and factual, and if both sides of the story haven't been told then you should be careful about what you say in public.

Particularly because this kind of reputation damage can follow someone extensively.

if these are the mods where i think they are, then "fair and factual" are not in their vocab.
