Posted this on my FB in less detail.
I went for a jog/walk today around Crown Hill Park. I've mentioned this park previously. It's a fairly large park with a lake in the middle, a wildlife refuge, and over 11 miles of trails: paved, gravel, and horse made. It has a beautiful backdrop in the west with its mountain view, and it's very popular with dog walkers.
I met a few pups today, including a beautiful, overly-enthusiastic golden, an incredibly happily submissive terrier mix, a shy collie mix, and a little black pembroke.
The last of these was being stalked by a coyote. Now, I've see coyotes in the park previously, but only at night, and not out in the open. This one was being nonchalant as you please while stalking said corgi, which it's owner had off leash until she saw the coyote. As I approached the scene, the coyote took off into the tall grass while still showing interest in the other dogs and people about, so I talked to the corgi owner a bit and then my wolf kicked in.
I say my wolf kicked in, because I immediately proceeded to stalk the coyote, not just in a "hey look, it's a coyote" kind of way, but in an adrenaline pumping, anticipating the chase kind of way. And chase it I did, snarling, snuffling, and growling the whole while. It stayed well ahead of me, but came to a stop every once in a while as if to make sure I was actually chasing it. Once we got to the unoccupied part of the park, it got too far ahead for me to continue (I had just jogged for the past hour and was getting tired).
I gave it a parting howl; it looked back at me in confusion, and, pleased as punch, I turned and headed back home. I hope that coyote stays away from people's dogs, otherwise you know their owners will not be forgiving.
