Well, I started working in my field (Psychology). In a prison. I started grad school as soon as possible. After a couple of years of that, I took a temp job working on computers (so very NOT Psychology, btw), so I could pay rent and eat. Fourteen years later, I'm a Senior Network Analyst. I like what I do, but there are other jobs I might like more (forest ranger, cabinet maker) but they pay significantly less than I make now. To be totally honest, I'm still not completely sure what I want to do when I grow up.
I think if you're not surprised by where you are compared to where you thought you'd be, you're doing it wrong.
