My favorite author above all is Lloyd Alexander. He wrote the Prydain Cycle (Book of Three, Taran the Wanderer) and the lesser known Westmark series. I think you'd prefer Westmark over Prydain, it's his later work and a much more sophisticated read--For a set of young adult novels. Also, if you can find it, the Arkadians is also excellent. It's a single volume.

I don't know if you've ever read Patricia C. Wrede, but she penned the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, which I just had the pleasure of re-reading. They're a quick, light read, and hilarious to boot. Very along the lines of Shrek humor, only these books came first.

Brian Jacques "Redwall" series is also really good, if you can get over the fact that all the characters are animals. Easier to digest when you're a middle schooler. They really aren't children's books...in one of them a main character is nearly crucified. Literally, but they're a good read.

Most of my tastes are fantasy, of course, though there are some EXCELLENT Star Wars novels out there. If you'd be into that, just ask in yo' reply and I'll reference the worth while ones. Also you might want to pick up some Chuck Palahunik (Fight Club, Invisible Monsters) he's a fun mind fuck.

I loved "Power of One", it was the ONLY required reading text I enjoyed senior year. The writing is superb, and I think it wouldn't be too heavy for your attention span issues.

If you're looking to torture yourself with political intrigue, many many characters, and the possibility of taking notes while reading the series, Wheel of Time really is a FANTASTIC SERIES. The storytelling is amazing. It took me two reads to really get the hang of it, BUT once you do MAN it's awesome. I think of it as an emotional investment at this point. DO NOT READ IT UNTIL THE LAST BOOK COMES OUT. Or, like the rest of us, re-read it five times while WAITING FOR THE LAST BOOK. Also don't bother with the prequel book unless, when you are reading the series you fall in love with Siuan, Moiraine or Lan as characters. You don't really need it to enjoy the other books. WoT is a harsh mistress, but we've come to love the pain. *glossy eyed*

Um. I think that's it. Heh. *sheepish look*
