Work avoidance

It's holiday season thus very quiet at work and I'm not up to being creative in my work finding endeavors thus post to LJ.

Last night I went and bought an iPod Nano, something I'd been contemplating for a while but could never quite justify the expense. My parents, though, got me a gift card for Best Buy so I braved the post-Christmas crowds and bought one of the little buggers. I am in love! I didn't really get the obsession with them before, just thought they were a cool and pretty handy device. Yeah, after spending 4 or 5 hours last night ripping CDs to it, I get it now.

I started with my Beatles collection then grabbed whatever was nearby, which happened to be my Monkees collection. As I'm listening to some of the songs I'm reminded of the fic I wrote in the fandom. Generally, I'm not a big fan of going back and reading things I've written, because they're never as good as I remember them being, but, I had nothing better to do, so I pulled up the old files.

Imagine my surprise when not only did they not suck, though yeah, there are some rough spots in some of them and really I'd do a couple things different with one of the OCs in particular, they're actually pretty good. There was a lot of humor in them which I still found funny but I came across a line I wrote that just blew my mind.

In context:
~
"What are you two doing?"

Micky, who'd been obliviously dancing around with the giraffe head
perched on top of his head like some sort of deranged witch doctor,
startled and quickly tucked the piece under his arm. "Oh, hey Mr.
Babbitt. It's a present." He said, gesturing to the few pieces remaining
in the car, "For Lisa."

"A present." The older man eyed the giraffe head warily, visions of
ritual sacrifice dancing in his head. "And what exactly is it?"

"It's a representation of the incongruous nature of the universe in the
form of a mechanistic version of a Giraffa camelopardalis. Ultimately
it's a commentary on the subjective nature of reality and man's
definition of humor and farce."

Both men turned baffled expressions on Renee as she came outside and
calmly rattled off her answer to the landlord's question.

Now, that last line is /perfect/ coming from that character. However, I have no idea how it managed to come out of my head. Which was, of course, one of the challenges of writing the stories, the two OCs are way, way smarter than I am.

I found some notes on some other stories I was thinking about and the temptation is there to slide back into this world and write some of them. It was a fun universe to write in and I loved the characters.
