Israeli Couscous/Steel Cut Oats

Mar 19, 2009 21:10

I have been scouring Sydney at present for steel cut oats and mograbieh/pearl couscous/giant couscous/Israeli couscous. Health shops, Macro, gourmet grocers, Fratelli Fresh...To no avail!!! Another fellow gourmet at work found some steel cut oats for me in her local health shop (for less than $5) and tipped me off that I could get Israeli ( Read more... )

I've been reading everywhere about Israeli couscous - lots of recipes around for it. Does it taste like regular couscous or more like barley or what?

Also, I have a link for you (surprise, surprise):

They stock organic black bean spaghetti. Apparently really low carb and high in protein. I'm going to order some next week and give them a whirl. Should be fun!

i've seen it at the organic shops here - but was concerned whether it would have that bitey pasta texture that i love. omg i love carbs so much. something has been up with me this week, all i want to do is eat carbs. i dream about peanut butter, jam and bread. i look forward to my lunchtime carbs ardently. after eating dinner, i'm still thinking about carbs. i don't know what's happened to me!!!

Set point, maybe? http://www.mirror-mirror.org/set.htm

Besides, asians traditionally eat a lot of carbs, don't they? Or is that just stereotype bullshit?

we totally do - we eat carbs at every meal and don't feel bad about it. i guess most of us are in the habit of using rice to 'bulk out' a meal. i'm not a huge rice eater, but i've always been a carb eater. i don't freak out about it too much - focussing more on calories and how i feel. it isn't carbs that make you fat, it's how much you eat really. i'm just conscious of how much i want to eat them at the moment (ie. more than normal ( ... )

Why avoiding carbs so hard? It can't be a weight loss thing surely . . .

i'm not avoiding them - i'm trying to have about 30% of my total calories from carbs. if i had my way, it'd be like 60% ;)

i'm not trying to lose weight, just trying to eat right and fuel my body efficiently for the training that i'm doing

Peanut butter, bread, carrot and cabbage. It's practically a health food!

zomg, that's a lot of cabbage!!! i prefer my peanut butter with something sweet...an afternoon snack that i love (and find good to train on) is sliced up apple with some peanut butter on it.

i eat heaps at lunch - but most of it is veg, so it does keep me quite full - usually half a carrot, half a zucchini, handful of lettuce, sliced up mushroom, diced half tomato, quarter of an avocado...then add some protein (tuna, cottage cheese) and some carb (sorj, chick peas, beans).

btw, israeli couscous is made from semolina, so more like a pasta.
