things I am loving

1) Making ice cream without having to go to the effort of cooking the custard. Just whizz up the (free-range) eggs until fluffy, gradually add sugar and beat until dissolved, then add a small amount of milk, loads of cream (flavour pre- or mid-churn depending on the type of ice cream being made). Use quality ingredients and make sure everything is as cold as possible (especially your churning bowl), and you can't go wrong! The texture is great, and nobody has died from eating my raw-egg ice creams as yet. Best of all, I don't have to stand around stirring custard for ages.

2) My new mincer, which I picked up for $60 from Big W. Not only can I control what goes into my mince, but using it is fun!

3) Duchy Originals cookbook. I got this for $5.95 at a book sale a couple of weeks ago (it retails for around $50), and both the sweet and savoury recipes are gorgeous.

4) Fennel baked in olive oil, lemon juice and sea salt.

5) Homegrown herbs, vegetables, and other edible plants. We live quite far from the shops so it really helps to have a few ingredients on hand. I'm very new to this "grow your own" thing but I'm happy that my little collection of coriander, shiso and sage are doing well. My mother is a total green thumb so I have access to a lot of other foods too - passionfruit, choko, red pawpaw, yams, tomatoes, kaffir lime, several types of chilli (they're almost a weed in our gardens!), pumpkin, galangal, lavender, various herbs and, very recently, our first little crop of macadamia nuts. I ate my first really fresh macadamia nut two days ago and it was amazing - very soft and creamy.
